Retina Surgery

RETINA SURGERY

Retina surgery refers to a variety of surgical procedures used to treat diseases and conditions affecting the retina, the thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye that senses light and sends visual signals to the brain.

When is Retina Surgery Needed?
  • Retinal detachment
  • Macular hole
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal vein occlusion
  • Age-related macular degeneration (advanced cases)

TYPES OF RETINA SURGERY

Vitrectomy is a surgery that removes the fluid in the eye to treat issues like retinal detachment, helping to fix the retina and improve vision.

Scleral buckling is a surgery where a silicone band is placed around the eye to help the retina reattach. The band stays in the eye permanently and is not visible.

Laser photocoagulation uses a laser to make small burns around retinal damage, preventing further issues. It's often used to treat diabetic retinopathy in a clinic.

Cryopexy uses cold to seal retinal tears and help the retina reattach, often combined with other treatments like scleral buckling or gas bubbles for better results.

Pneumatic retinopexy is a procedure where a gas bubble is injected into the eye to help the retina heal. The patient must keep their head in a certain position.

Frequently Asked Question about Retina Surgery

  • What is retina surgery?

Retina surgery refers to procedures performed to treat conditions affecting the retina — the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Common surgeries include:

    • ● Vitrectomy
    • ● Retinal detachment repair
    • ● Laser surgery
    • ● Scleral buckling
  • Is retina surgery painful?

Most patients do not experience pain during surgery. It’s usually performed under local or general anesthesia. Mild discomfort or soreness can occur after the procedure.

  • How long does the surgery take?

Depending on the complexity, surgery can take between 30 minutes to 2 hours.

  • What is the recovery time after retina surgery?

Initial recovery takes about 2 to 4 weeks, but complete healing may take a few months. Visual recovery varies by individual and condition.

  • What is the role of gas or silicone oil in surgery?

Gas bubbles or silicone oil may be used to hold the retina in place. Gas eventually absorbs on its own, while silicone oil may need to be removed later.
